Tools for Anxiety Relief: How to Find Stillness

I feel like I was born with anxiety but that’s not true.

Anxiety is something that we learn from our caregivers, teachers, and the adults around us when we’re young children. Anxiety is not your fault.

We live in a busy society that tells us we must hustle, we must do all the things, and we’re not allowed to drop the ball on anything.

That’s not fair to us as humans, we need time to rest so that we can replenish ourselves. 

So how do we step away from the hustle when we believe we’re not allowed to do so? 

We find a way to be still. 

It wasn’t until I took my first yoga class that I realized it was possible for my mind to be still. That was a revelation, like I had opened a door to a new way of being. I was surprised at how quickly I could feel calm during an hour-long class.

I discovered even short bursts of yoga for 5 or 10 minutes was enough to calm the hamster wheel of thoughts in my head.

As I practiced yoga more and more I tapped into this ability to find stillness, and I felt better. But there was still something missing. Because the feeling wouldn’t always last. I’d get a call, an email, or a text and then all of the good work I’ve done in my yoga class felt like it made no difference. 

It wasn’t until I started journaling regularly that I realized these two things together are the answer for me. When I journal I get to become an observer of my thoughts. That makes it easier to understand where my thoughts are coming from so that I can see them instead of feeling overrun by them. When I practice yoga, it helps me release all the anxiety and tension stored in my body, so that my mind and heart feel clearer. 

The two things that help me find stillness and support my anxiety relief are yoga and journaling.
