What Led Me to My First Career

In elementary school I wanted to be the lead singer in a pop band and also a veterinarian.

Stardome looked stressful with all the paparazzi, so eventually that dream faded. Though my love of singing and performing will never fade. My veterinarian dream faded when I realized I only liked cats and wouldn’t be able to handle them dying, so I let that dream go too. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be.

In high school I was a counselor for a 5th grade outdoor education camp. That experience changed my life and gave me a new direction.

I was matched up with a naturalist named Joie Armstrong. Joie was amazing and inspiring. She had boundless energy. She got so excited about scat (aka poop) especially fox scat. She kept the 5th graders engaged and she was brave enough to allow bees to land on her face! She was my hero. I wanted to become an environmental educator just like her. That decision put me on the path of choosing my college major (ecology and evolution) and helped me (eventually) to find a job in New York City where I got to teach environmental education all over Brooklyn.

I am so grateful that Joie influenced my life, her smile and energy live on in my memory and I have a fondness for poop thanks to her. She set me on a path to discover my own personal journey, my love of nature and teaching others.
