Why We Need So Many Yoga Teachers
When I decided to become a yoga teacher I realized that there were already A LOT of yoga teachers in the world, so why did I think that I could do it too?
Well because it was something I wanted to do. It was something I felt called to do.
I took my first yoga class in 1999 and it changed my life. I felt more grounded and connected to the earth when I walked out of that class, literally. We did a bunch of hip opening and low back strengthening which were all the things that my body desperately needed that I had no idea that I needed until I took that yoga class. Sometime shortly after, I knew (eventually) that I'd become a yoga teacher. I just needed to find the right training that felt in alignment with me.
My yoga Journey is unique to me. I experienced a number of Yoga Styles and found that I love vinyasa flow type classes where you get to link breath and movement and get sweaty and move quickly and then slow down at the end and it's delicious juiciness for me. Whereas classes like Ashtanga that have a set flow don't feel as good to me. Which is interesting because you might think those are really similar classes. There's something in that sequence of Ashtanga that just doesn't jive for me. It's not the right fit for my body.
That's what makes yoga so special. There are so many different varieties, so many different teachers and modalities that you get to pick the one that works best for you.
That makes it okay for there to be thousands and thousands of yoga teachers in the world because so many people need those different voices and need those different teachers with different styles of yoga so that it makes sense to them.
I find it funny that I enjoy taking yoga in a heated room but in all honesty I hate the Bikram style of yoga because it felt like the instructors were telling me to hurt myself. I wasn't allowed to do anything different from what they instructed. It was like I didn't know how to listen to my body. Only this teacher observing the outside knew what was correct for me. That didn't work for me. Yet there are so many people where that's exactly what they need. They need that extreme heat, they need that no excuses space in order to get out of their heads and find their transformation.
When we connect with teachers, coaches, and guides that resonate with us, that's when real transformation happens.
If you feel frustrated and confused by someone trying to support you, then your body basically goes into a shutdown kind of mode where you're blocking all external input and then you're in a space of extreme confusion and that’s not good.
So when someone says something that resonates, that makes sense, that gives you an aha or eureka type moment, those are the teachers, coaches, and guides that are right for you.
You don’t have to like everyone, not everyone is made for you. Find the folks that inspire, help you to question in a good way, and bring you joy. Those are the folks that you want in your life.
Who inspires or resonates with you?
Your words and ideas matter too.
You’ve got interesting stories and ideas to share (though your inner critic might be trying real hard to convince you otherwise).
I’ve got relentless encouragement for you, especially if your inner critic doesn’t want to hear it.
You matter. You are worthy. You have unique gifts that the world deserves to experience. What gifts do you have to share?
And if the thought of that has you running for the hills, don’t worry, I got your back.
I'm teaching CommuniTea Yoga this Sunday November 27th at 9:30am PDT, just in time to recover from Thanksgiving. Where we’ll connect, journal, and do some nourishing yoga to restore you.

Nothing is wrong with me. My limiting beliefs took over, which is a normal human thing that happens. AND there’s something I could do about it. To build trust in yourself, you gotta reprogram the negative voice in your head, here's how.
