What Frustration Really Means
True confession, I don't enjoy teaching yoga online.
It was something I felt that I should do because I'm a yoga teacher and we had the whole pandemic thing and so therefore I need to teach online yoga so that more people have access to my classes.
Yet no one was showing up for my online classes, well not no one, there were between 0 and 3 people each time. So sometimes I got to teach.
Having 0 to 3 students show up is not sustainable. AND I was ignoring the fact that everytime I offered online class my head was full of excuses. It was impossible to get out of bed on time. I felt frustrated and annoyed, which meant I was ignoring the signs that something needed to change.
I feel kind of stupid now because frustration is my key indicator that something needs to change and I was ignoring my frustration.
Instead I kept pushing through going on about how I'm a yoga teacher, I'm supposed to teach online, that's what I need to do, that's the right thing to do. But it's not for me.
I've experienced many brilliant teachers who are kicking butt at teaching online and I genuinely love their classes, but for me showing up as a teacher in that space is frustrating. Because it's missing that human connection element that I so desire.
What's fascinating to me is that I genuinely love coaching my clients online.
Using Zoom for coaching is freaking brilliant! No one has to worry about parking, no one has to worry about how long it's going to take to get there. It's like it's 5 minutes from your couch to your computer or maybe you’re already at your computer so you just need 2 minutes to go pee and then you're ready. It feels easeful and I appreciate the ease of it.
I recognize that for some folks, being online may feel less connected.
That might be a major hesitation point just like it was for me wanting to teach online. I don't want that to be a barrier for anyone. So if you're one of those people please know I am working towards creating a space in my home office to meet with clients in person. It won't be immediate. There's A LOT of cleanup and getting rid of a lot of stuff that needs to happen first. It’s on my list and I plan to make that happen by the end of 2023.
Where does this leave us now?
I'm still feeling frustrated at myself for not recognizing that online teaching isn't for me.
And because I don't like to disappoint people there will be one more online yoga class. It'll be on the 18th of December and you can learn about it here.
I dreamt of being a yoga teacher shortly after taking my first class back in 1999.
It took me until 2014 to become one. That’s a long time to wait and I felt so much frustration when I wasn’t living in alignment with my dream.
Those moments of frustration are nudges to remind us that we’re pushing ourselves to do something that we think is right, but isn’t in alignment with our deepest dreams and wants.
And often those dreams and wants get pushed so deep that we forget what they are and frustration becomes normal.
If you’re in the frustration zone, you don’t have to stay there.
You really don’t. It’s an opportunity to get curious, ask questions, and uncover what’s feeling blocked.
That might feel totally scary too, especially if you don’t have tools or coaches in place to guide you through. It’s ok to feel scared, unsure, or frustrated. Those are all normal reactions.
If you’re tired of feeling frustrated and don’t know where to start in uncovering what’s feeling blocked, then I invite you to join me for a Thoughtful Journaling Workshop.
Journaling is my go-to tool for understanding myself better, I’d be a mess without it.

I want something different for next year. I’m not one for setting resolutions, I gave up on them years ago, I don’t really see the point of trying to make a change that won’t stick.
